Grey’s Anatomy ReCap – Give Peace a Chance – 10/29/09

derek

This week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy is called ‘Give Peace a Chance’.  Derek was faced with the decision on whether to operate on an ” inoperable” tumor surrounding the spine of Seattle Grace lab-tech Isaac. Everyone is excited over the tumor with Bailey (Chandra Wilson) even calling it “the great white of tumors” and the reason why she got into medicine. The chief (James, Pickens, Jr.), however, is not too pleased with the hullabaloo because he thinks the tumor is inoperable.

Derek must decide whether or not to forego the chief’s orders and push with the operation.    Derek moves forward and to choose who will be by his side during the surgery, Derek has the other doctors compete by placing a cup under a microscope with a dollar bill in the bottom – whoever gets closest to the president’s nose with a red marker will win.  Christina plays bored throughout the competition mocking all of the other doctors.  To her surprise – she doesn’t even make it into the cup and Dr. Avery scrubs in for the surgery.

Lexi is upset with Derek because he didn’t ask her to try out for the competition.  Derek tells Lexi that she can be his doctor and maintain his care while he is doing the surgery.  Dr. Avery refers to Lexi as Derek’s “bitch”.  Lexi is determined to outlast Dr. Avery in the operating room and wears a diaper to do it.

After 10 hours in surgery – Derek is still staring at the tumor through a microscope and hasn’t made a move yet.  The chief walked in and told Derek to stop the surgery.  Derek stopped the surgery.  There was no way to take out the tumor without risking the patient’s life.  Derek tells the patient they will reassess the tumor in a few months.  The patient, Isaac tells Dr. Shepherd to sleep on it and they will try again tomorrow.

Derek goes to Richard and tells him that they want to cut the spinal cord to get to the tumor.  The chief gives them two hours to complete the surgery.  As soon as the chief leaves the room Derek admits to the other doctors that he is not cutting the spinal cord.

It’s a tough surgery with Derek gettin sick and dehydrated and Dr. Avery also getting dehydrated and cramping up during the surgery.  Lexi ends up taking over for Dr. Avery.  After 26 hours of surgery Derek has removed almost the entire tumor but is faced with one final decision that will determine if his patients is paralyzed or not.  To make his decision he does eenie meanie.   It looks like Derek made the right choice – Isaac is not paralyzed!!

Alex waits for Izzie at her chemo treatment – but Izzy never showed up.  Alex is devastated that she skipped her treatment.

Richard fires Derek to which Derek responds,

“Go home, sleep on it – we’ll talk tomorrow”

Another great episode!!  What did you think??
