DWTS – Finals – ReCap 11/23/09

Final Week! This episode, each pair relived their highs and lows on the show and gave reaction to being in the final. And oh yeah, did three different dances.
KELLY AND LOUIS
I didn’t think I really could do it. This is my opportunity to show people that I really have grown up.
Viennese Waltz, Week 1:
Kelly: I was thinking, “What the hell am I doing on this show? Just keep smiling, it’ll be over soon!” I’ve never cried tears of joy before.
Tango, Week 2:
Louis: Kelly put so much pressure on herself, it got the better of her.
Kelly: I remember thinking, “I can’t do this.” He said, “yes you can.” The tango turned me into a fighter on this show.
Charleston, Week 4:
Kelly: For the first time on this show, I didn’t think, “oh, what’s my next move?”
Kelly: It was such a learning process and adventure, I never thought I’d get this far, but I’m so glad I did!
Carrie Ann came to visit them in the studio to give pointers on what they need to improve to take home the trophy.
Carrie Ann: You’re the one that has had the biggest transformation.
Carrie Ann then discussed and gave pointers on Kelly’s trouble with passion in their dances. CA also asked a series of awkward questions, like, “Does he smell nice? Does his skin feel good to touch?” Kelly said it made her uncomfortable, but I think you could see the improvement in the chemistry between the two this week.
Kelly and Louis performed an Argentine Tango.
Len: You epitomize what this show is about, you came out and through hard work and perseverance made it to the final.
Bruno: You have been the revelation this season, I never would have thought you came as you started and ended up here in the final. [During this dance,] at times, your free hand was a bit loose, and you could have used more light sensuality.
Carrie Ann: I’m so proud of you tonight, you came miles ahead with the intimacy. Very sophisticated.
Samantha: What did it mean for you to hear Carrie Ann say she’s proud of you after working with you this week?
Kelly: I just wished we would have had her help in week one.
Carrie Ann: 9
Len: 9
Bruno: 8
Total: 26
Mya and Dmytri
Viennese Waltz, Week 1:
Mya: Walking down the stairs that first night, I was so nervous.
Dmitry: Everything was beautiful!
Mya: [After the replay of Len giving them a 5] Len has affected our season more than anyone else.
Jitterbug, Week 6:
Mya: It took forever to get to the dance [the Jitterbug was the one that Team Dmya spent all that time dusting off Len's desk, if you recall].
Samba, Week 8:
Mya: I was living in the moment that dance. And finally, we pleased Len!
Mya, on her expectation for the final: Last week, we found the balance between entertainment and choreography. But this week it’s back to an even playing field.
Len visited them in the studio. “I thought their paso was a little bit lackluster. Mya is a little bit subdued. This will not be good enough to take home the mirror ball. So far ‘good’ has been ‘good enough,’ but it won’t be. It’s got to be great.”
As Len mentioned, Mya and Dmitry did the Paso. They are just an incredible pair.
Bruno: The power of Mya, unleashed for all to admire! Fearless, flamboyant. Amazing.
Carrie Ann: Mya, I dub you the queen of the Paso Doble. Very dynamic.
Len: The pressure is immense, and you come out like the no stress express. My favorite Paso from all the seasons was Mel B and Max, and this was right up there with it.
Mya: Len gave the most criticism this season, and it paid off. We are here because of that.
Carrie Ann: 10
Len: 10
Bruno: 10
Their third perfect score this season!
DONNY AND KYM
Foxtrot, Week 1:
I drew on that 46 years of performance. Look at my posture. STRAIGHTEN YOUR BACK, DONNY! I thought I did a great job, but I got knocked down. I knew I could sell the dance, but it’s a dance competition.
Argentine Tango, Week 5:
Week 5 was a turning point for me. [After showing a particularly sexy dance move, where Donny slid his hand down Kym's thigh] I was sleeping on the couch for that one.
Quickstep, Week 8:
Donny: We were hot, but then…
Kym: Ouch. You were so sick.
Donny: I knew I was messing up big time. The room was spinning during this. This was one of the hardest parts of this season.
Donny: What a roller coaster this has been. I’ll have to find the perfect balance of technique and performance.
Bruno came to visit them in the studio. “I know you can win, but I don’t want you to win it because of who you are. I want you to win because of what you do.” Then he shouted (in true Bruno fashion) “YOU’RE NOT DOING VEGAS, YOU’RE DOING DANCING WITH THE STARS!”
Bruno closed by telling the camera “no one can put on a show like Donny Osmond.”
The two of them did a Cha Cha. Kym’s dress was this loose silver number that I couldn’t figure out how it was staying on her body. It was flipping and flopping and swaying and all kinds of crazy.
Carrie Ann: Where did those hips come from? What a breakthrough! In the final, the hips bust loose. You had that one little hand bobble.
Len: Ding dong Donny, THAT was a cha cha cha. Bruno must have worked the magic there. it’s a tough dance. Just that one little flop.
Bruno: This guy is a professional, a credit to his profession. No attitude. That is a star.
CA: 9
Len: 9
Bruno: 9
Total: 27
When asked about advice from Marie, “Marie said to have fun. And with that last number, I just had fun.”
The side by side dance/Mega Mix is a weird mixture of a Viennese Waltz, Jive, and Samba, the three dances they each performed the best.
Kelly: I am in the final three with 2 people that have been dancing their entire lives. I am at a huge disadvantage.
Mya: The last time we did the Viennese Waltz we got a five. Maybe this will be our redemption.
Kelly: I kept thinking, I can forget first place, because Mya has that, but then I just told myself I can do it.
Donny: I am a quarter century older than Kelly.
Kym: And Mya. I know, they can be your daughters.
Donny: Thank you.
Mya: I have the trophy in my sights.
Donny: I am still in my prime.
It was interesting to see all three pairs do the three dances one right after another, side by side, because each of them have very clear strengths and weaknesses. Plus, when they were off beat it was…well, it was very, very evident. For someone that isn’t a dancer, sometimes I have a harder time understanding what the judges have to say, but here, it was clear by comparison.
Len: I thought this was going to be so easy to judge, but no. This shows how close you all are. I thought you all did spectacularly well.
Bruno: Mya, you can samba! Kelly, your waltz was incredible. Donny, age doesn’t mean anything. At times I thought you were one of the pros out there.
Carrie Ann: Donny, I was impressed with the way you kept up. Mya, your samba makes my hips go boom boom! And Kelly, I love the grace you bring to the Viennese Waltz.
Kelly: I had a wardrobe malfunction! [I didn't see it, and Samantha said they cut away very quickly, but did anyone else? What happened?]
Mya: Its scary being on the floor with everyone at once!
Donny: It meant so much to me to hear the judges say I kept up with the pros!
3rd place and 26 points: Kelly and Louis
2nd place and 28 points: Donny and Kym
1st place and 30 points: Team Dmya (keeping up their perfect score)
Back to individual dances, and the most memorable part of every season: the freestyle.
KELLY AND LOUIS:
Louis: This freestyle makes you or breaks you.
Kelly: You have to have a great song, and I wanted something that represented our journey.
They chose “I Will Survive,” which was perfect–the opening line, “At first I was afraid, I was petrified…” You all remember this, I’m sure.
Kelly was having quite a bit of trouble wearing her high heels for long periods of time. She said she’s torn the cartilage in both of her big toes. She was struggling, but she said, “I’m going to try whatever Louis wants me to try. I’m not just a charming girl. I want to prove that my dancing ability is good enough to win.”
I will say that you could tell she was having a great time out there. She fell, yes, but she was laughing and just beaming. I think she got more out of the competition than any other contestant, even if she’s not the best dancer.
Bruno: One thing is for sure: you’ve never looked more beautiful than tonight. You had all the glitz and glamor of disco. I would know, I was there. Sometimes people fell on the floor, it was part of the night!
Carrie Ann: Ok, flashback. Freestyle is about giving us what we want to see. I wanted to see you were a survivor. You were. When you fall, you get back up. When you mess up, you laugh at yourself. You are what people watching this show want to be.
Len: I know there were a few worrying incidents, but you got back up.
Kelly: It looked like Louis pooped me out, but I had the best time of my entire life.
Carrie Ann: 8
Len: 8
Bruno: 8
Total: 24
Cumulative Score from the night: 76
Mya: I want to do something fresh.
Dmitry: I think it would be great if we did something from “Hairspray.”
Myathen hinted aroundthat she wanted to do one of her songs, which I kind of wish they had. In the end, they went with “Can’t Stop the Beat,” which was cute, but maybe because I remember the video from “Free” I was on Mya’s side with this. (”YO. THIS IS MYA.”)
So they went with Hairspray and did a high energy sixties-inspired dance.
Carrie Ann: Yeah, ok, high energy, fun, but, not outstanding to me. You do “Hairspray.” You were competing with Adam Shankman when you do this. It didn’t showcase you, Mya, you’re so much better than this.
Len: There was a sameness about it, and it never when anywhere. I kept expecting something and it never happened.
Bruno: You’re on the beat right on, all the way through, but I was expecting something more for you.
Mya: I’ve had to sacrifice quite a lot in my personal life, but you know what, it was all worth it.
Carrie Ann: 9
Len: 9
Bruno: 9
Total: 27
Cumulative Score from the Night: 87
DONNY AND KYM
In the rehearsal video, Kym mentioned that Donny gets distracted and bobbles. So for rehearsal, she’s doing everything she can to distract him and test his focus. Marie came to rehearsal and harassed him, dancing past him and taunting him. Kym employed the use of a fog machine. They showed Donny trying–and failing–to do lifts and spins. He was lifting her over giant padded mats. That turned out to be excellent foresight.
Donny said in closing, “If you had a sister named Marie, and she was going to rub it in your face for the rest of your life, you’d want to win it too.”
THEY DID A BROADWAY ROUTINE. Their Broadway routine was maybe the most precious thing I’ve ever seen on television. As Bruno said, no one can put on a show like Donny Osmond.
Len: That was truly an absolute showstopper. I can hear the noises Bruno is making, and I have a feeling he’s going to shout. So I’m going to move.
Bruno: HE’S RIGHT. THIS IS SHOW BUSINESS AT ITS BEST. IN THE GREAT TRADITION OF BROADWAY, HOLLYWOOD, VEGAS.
Carrie Ann: Tonight, welcome to the hall of fame of the freestyle!
Marie was in the audience cheering loudly. What an adorable family.
Samantha asked Donny about what it meant to him to have the audience support all season. He replied,
“Oh, it’s everything, we’re in the finals thanks to the fans. We need your votes.”
He has admittedly had a rough week here and there, but he’s adorable and I don’t think anyone could question his dance capabilities.
Carrie Ann: 10
Len: 10
Bruno: 10
Total: 30
Cumulative Score for the night: 85
Scoreboard:
Dmya: 87
Donny & Kym: 85
Kelly & Louis: 76
It’s going to be close. I will be anxious to see what happens tomorrow night, but I really think Donny has this one. He’s got widespread audience support and tonight he brought it the way that we’ve been waiting for all season. I can’t help but have a “what could have been moment with Dmya and “Free,” but I think Donny will edge her out in votes anyway.
